For a long time, my perspective on life was to move forward as fast as I can and not look back, to have no regrets and figure things out as I go. The past existed as an obscure reality, almost like a dream or a movie, in which I would quickly forget the story but could always recall how it made me feel.
When I looked back on my childhood, the depth of emotion never failed to confound me. I’ve spent a lot of energy running away from myself -- a little girl who had an ugly and painful experience. Regardless of my efforts to silence and ignore this little girl, there were always clues in the drama of my life that pointed to her untold story.
This work is to honor the little girl within me, who I’ve tried to keep hidden for so long. Truth is that she had thrived throughout all the highs and lows of my life. Her brokenness is the source of the great compassion I have for the unseen, unheard and misunderstood. Her resilience is what maintains my unyielding faith and hope in redemption. It is her story (my story) that makes me the woman I am today.
