When I acquired a house that was over a hundred years old, I already had a vision of how I wanted to transform the space. Breaking down walls was my first course of action, to allow more light to come through and open the rooms for people to come together.
I documented the crumbling drywall, plaster and wood, as I tore into the walls with a hammer and crowbar. I was fascinated by the layers of paint and different styles of wallpaper, giving evidence to the unique personalities of families who have made their home here generations before.
This was a significant process for me -- to break down walls and see all the layers that masked the past, realizing how the thick walls had started to encroach on the usable space within the house. It sparked the awareness of the limitations of compartmentalization, and I began to break through the interior walls of my life (to let people in and allow light to shine in) to promote a better sense of wholeness.
